What is Neurology?

Neurology is the specialized branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system. The nervous system includes the:

  • Brain and spinal cord
  • Cranial nerves connecting to the eyes, face, ears, nose and throat
  • Peripheral nerves (nerves that supply the arms and legs)
  • Muscles of the body
  • Autonomic nerves (nerves that supply internal organs, including blood vessels and sweat glands)

A Team That Empowers You

Our neurology specialists view you as their most valuable partner. They’ll work closely with you and your family members to design a treatment plan that’s built around your specific condition and symptoms, health goals and lifestyle.

Because pinpointing conditions of the nervous system is a complex process, your treatment will begin with a thorough evaluation, including a review of your medical history and physical exam, and will involve additional diagnostic and neurological testing as needed. Members of your care team may include board-certified neurologists, psychologists, registered nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, social workers, and others. All are dedicated to empowering you with education, providing you with compassion and delivering the most effective treatment plan possible.

Comprehensive Neurological Care

Together with Lakeshore Health Partners - Neurology, we strive to help patients realize improved quality of life by offering the full spectrum of innovative treatments and therapies for diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Combining clinical skill, cutting-edge research and personalized attention, our experienced neurologists provide comprehensive care for those suffering from pain, weakness, visual disturbances or other symptoms stemming from a neurological disorder.

Some of the neurological conditions we evaluate and treat include:

  • Stroke: A stroke occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. When a stroke happens, time loss can mean brain loss. That’s why rapid response with the best treatment protocols is critical. Holland Hospital Stroke Center offers advanced stroke treatment.
  • Dementia & Alzheimer’s: Neurodegenerative diseases, like dementia and Alzheimer's, are a range of conditions affecting brain neurons (building blocks of the nervous system). Dementia is a progressive brain dysfunction resulting in the loss of mental functions, such as thinking, memory and reason, that greatly impacts a person’s daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is responsible for at least half of all dementia cases.
  • Headaches & Migraines: There are currently around 150 diagnostic categories for headaches. Tension headaches and migraines are perhaps the most well-known types of headache. Tension headaches cause mild to moderate pain, and come and go over a prolonged period of time. Migraine headaches are thought to be related to blood vessel contractions and other changes in the brain, as well as inherited abnormalities in certain parts of the brain. Migraines are characterized by throbbing head pain, and may be accompanied by nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Multiple Sclerosis & Parkinson’s: Two common degenerative neurological conditions include Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis (MS). Patients with these conditions can suffer deficiencies in motor functioning, changes in mood and a gradual loss of cognitive abilities. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system marked by tremor, muscular rigidity, and slow, imprecise movement.
