Technology allows for fewer complications and faster recovery
Lakeshore Health Partners - General Surgery's William Houskamp, MD, recently celebrated performing his 500th daVinci robot-assisted surgery – a milestone accomplishment with this advanced technology.
Holland Hospital is one of an exclusive number of hospitals in Michigan offering access to the very latest in surgical technology. The daVinci Si system enables specially trained surgeons to perform certain surgeries through tiny, one-to-two centimeter incisions, or in some cases, a single incision through the navel. Working at a console adjacent to the patient, the surgeon operates the da Vinci’s precise surgical instruments using its high-definition 3D video camera with 10 times magnification. The system also has motion stabilization to maximize precision in the surgeon’s hand movement during the procedure.
“The daVinci is used for gallbladder, hernia and spleen removal, colon resections and the LINX procedure for reflux disease,” said Holland Hospital Surgical Services Director, Krista Garcia, RN, MSN, CNOR. “This technology leads to shorter hospital stays, less pain, fewer complications and faster recoveries,” she added.
Dr. Houskamp is one of 11 surgeons trained in specific robotic procedures. Since the first surgery in August of 2007, 2,177 procedures have been performed, 370 of them just last year.
