Improving Quality Through Research
Each semester, Hope College nursing students work hand-in-hand with Holland Hospital to analyze areas of improvement and expand their knowledge in the healthcare world. This semester, six students have been working in conjunction with Spiritual Care Services, Home Health Services and Orthopedics. Project topics include:
- Satisfaction with Spiritual Care from chaplaincy in the inpatient and outpatient settings
- Use of on-call services in Home Health
- Hospital admission trends from Home Health
- Effectiveness of a multi-model pain management package for total hip and knee replacements to reduce opioid use and decrease post-op nausea
- The impact on patients who receive a MAKO® total knee replacement
“My research experiences at Holland Hospital have equipped me with a better understanding of the research process. It has been interesting to examine the effects of new technology, such as the MAKO® robotic-arm assisted technology, on patient outcomes. I have been impressed with the helpfulness and friendliness of Holland Hospital's staff,” said Elise Haan, Hope College senior.
The combination of hands-on training and interaction with hospital staff make for an invaluable experience for everyone involved.
"Everybody at Holland Hospital was extremely hospitable and welcoming. I will never forget the staff that made my experience one to remember,” said Alyssa Adams, Hope College senior.
