Admitting & What to Bring

Prior to your stay at Holland Hospital you will receive a call from a member of our registration team, who will register you by phone and give you any information you need for your visit.

You will also be directed where to park.. If you arrive at the hospital and are uncertain where to go next, just ask for assistance at the Information Desk inside each entrance. A friendly staff person is ready to help you.

We want you to be as comfortable as possible. You are welcome to bring your own sleepwear and toiletries. For belongings such as glasses, hearing aids and dentures, it is helpful if you label the case or container with your name and place the items in your bedside stand when not in use. Please do not place them on your food tray or bed linen. Patients are responsible for these items.

You should also bring with you:

  • Picture identification
  • Insurance card
  • Any instructions your physician may have provided

While You're in the Hospital

We look forward to working with you and your family to provide a safe, restful and healthy environment for your stay.

All patients are issued wrist bands at admission. The bar code on your band enables hospital staff to positively identify you with one swipe of a scanner. It also provides your date of birth, medical record number, what tests are needed, and other necessary information. You may receive other bands as well and should wear them at all times while at the hospital.

Interpreters

Holland Hospital provides language services for clinical interpretation free of charge to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and those with sensory limitations, including deaf and blind individuals, who request interpretation assistance. These services are available at all Holland Hospital locations 24 hours a day, free of charge, upon request. Bilingual hospital staff may interpret. Patients may also request a family member, friend, or minor to interpret. Holland Hospital will ensure that all vital documents are translated accurately into the primary language of LEP patients.

Phones & Internet

Telephones are provided in each room for patients to use at any time. The hospital switchboard will transfer incoming calls to patient rooms between 7 am and 10 pm. For your privacy, operators are not permitted to give your phone number or room number to callers; however, you may share your phone number with family and friends so they can call you directly.

Wi-Fi is available to patients and guests in all areas of the hospital. You are welcome to bring your own laptop or tablet.

Meals

Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of treatment and recovery. Holland Hospital’s Food & Nutrition Services provides nutritious meals that fulfill patients’ diets as prescribed by their doctor. Meals are monitored by a registered dietitian.

During your hospital stay, a Food & Nutrition staff member will visit you daily to take your menu order. Each day there is a variety of main entrees, side dishes, snacks and beverages to choose from. Consideration will be given to special diets and preferences. If you wish to discuss any dietary needs or options, a registered dietitian is available to meet with you.

On most hospital units, meals are served according to the following schedule:

Breakfast: 7 am – 10 am
Lunch: 11:45 am – 2 pm
Dinner: 4:45 pm – 6 pm

Care for the Body, Mind and Spirit

Holland Hospital is committed to caring for the whole person—body, mind and spirit. Our Spiritual Care Services offer spiritual care for families and their loved ones, link them to their own faith communities, and create a healing environment.

Chaplains and Clergy

On-staff chaplains are available 24 hours a day to provide spiritual assistance, sacramental ministries, advance directive consultation, consultation concerning ethical care, and other services. They are also available to sit and talk or offer a listening ear. Chaplains and clergy offer care for those who have a faith community as well as those with no formal religious affiliation.

If you would like to contact a chaplain during daytime hours, call (616) 394-3362. After 5 pm or on weekends, your nurse can contact the on-call chaplain. If requested, chaplains will also contact your pastor, priest, rabbi or congregation representative to let them know you are a patient here.

Sacred texts including Christian, Jewish and Muslim texts of faith are available for your use while in the hospital. Ask your nurse or one of the chaplains if the text you need is not at the bedside.

Chapel of Hope & Healing Garden

Patients and guests are welcome to visit the hospital’s Chapel of Hope for prayer or meditation at any time. The chapel is a place of serenity for all people, regardless of faith or religion. It is located off the lobby across from the Gift Shop. Adjacent to the Chapel is the Healing Garden, a plant-filled atrium offering a tranquil retreat for those who seek solitude or simply enjoy nature.
