Special Care Nursery Reaches Milestone

Tue, Nov 4, 2014
Since opening in 2007, Holland Hospital's Special Care Nursery has been serving the needs of pre-term babies and their families. Seven years after opening, the nursery has surpassed a milestone with the admission of its l,000th patient in early November. “We are thankful to be able to provide this kind of high-level acute care in our community, keeping so many newborns and their families together close to home," states Carol Veldkamp, RN Clinical Manager of the hospital’s Boven Birth Center

With a dedicated team of pediatric hospitalists and RNs trained to use the latest technology and equipment, the nursery has made it possible for families to stay close to home while their baby's special care needs are met.  The nursery has eight high-tech infant beds specially designed to maintain a therapeutic environment for premature infants. In addition, the unit is equipped with a comfortable private lounge, kitchenette, bathroom and shower, lockers and breast feeding support for the convenience of families.

"It is so important to have this level of care available to serve the needs of pre-term infants who are born at 32 weeks of pregnancy and beyond," says Kathy Nania, RN, hospital Director of Women’s and Children’s Services.  "To have this facility available and quality care ready at a moment's notice is great piece of mind for families choosing to have their baby at Holland Hospital."

Over 1,800 babies are born each year in the Hospital's Boven Birth Center.  Approximately 8% of infants are born prematurely or with other conditions requiring admission to the Special Care Nursery.  Says Nania, "We are glad to be here, ready to ensure the healthiest start for the next 1,000 infants and their families in our community.”
