Medication Take Back Event

Date: Saturday, October 26, 2019
Time: 10 AM – 2 PM
Location: Holland Hospital, 602 Michigan Ave. Holland, MI

Every day, more than 130 Americans die from an opioid-related overdose—many of whom took the pain medication illegally, without a prescription. Medication Take Back events provide safe locations for disposing of unused medications while also protecting communities and the environment.

Holland Hospital is proud to partner with Community Mental Health of Ottawa County and the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN) to host a Medication Take Back Event on Saturday, October 26 from 10 AM – 2 PM. This is the second year Holland Hospital has participated in this community event. During the 2018 take back day, the hospital collected 111 pounds of medication alone.

Research shows many people will not properly dispose of their medications, increasing the potential of them being diverted into the community and waterways. This event serves to educate the community on how to safely use and store medication as well as offer the opportunity to dispose of unused and leftover prescription medications.

In April, the state of Michigan collected over one ton of unused medications. The collective effort resulted in hundreds of families safely removing a total of 3,000 pounds of medication including approximately 46,200 opioids from their homes while also increasing awareness about safe medication disposal.

Approved opioid collectors, primarily pharmacies and law enforcement agencies, and special take back events are the safest and most environmentally-friendly means of disposing unneeded medications.

In addition to Holland Hospital, the following locations are approved collections sites:

  • Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital, 8333 Felch St, Zeeland, MI 49464
