ICU/TU Reopens Feb. 7; 2-West Moves Back Next

Tue, Mar 5, 2013
Now that much of the heavy exterior construction work for the new Spine & Orthopedics floor is done, patient units that were temporarily relocated are returning to their customary places. The move-back begins TODAY as Intensive Care and Telemetry patients are transferred to the refurbished ICU/TU wing on the main level.

Other moves will follow in the next few weeks. 2-West, which has been sharing space with 3- West, will complete its move back to the second floor when patients are transferred on February 21. That paves the way for 3-West to be restored to its pre-move order on February 26.

ICU/TU Manager Adam March says that while his units’ temporary stay on 2-West for the past five months has “exceeded expectations,” staff members have been counting down the days until the move “home.” It helps that the critical care wing has all new carpeting, flooring and large flat-screen TVs, as well as five new ceiling lifts to help nursing staff lift patients. “It looks almost like it did when we moved in five years ago,” March said. “We’re really excited to move back.”

That the relocation of patient units has been so seamless is due to a tremendous amount of planning and collaboration, notes Carolyn Schaefer, Med/Surg and Critical Care Director, who began meeting with multidisciplinary planning teams last spring. Those staff will celebrate the successful moves on February 28.

As of Friday, February 1, the stairway and elevator at the Visitor Entrance have been re-opened. The new work is not immediately apparent because it fits in so well, but above the elevator you can see a new curved wall with windows. Behind it is the elevator lobby for people to step out onto when taking the elevator up to the Spine & Orthopedics Unit. (Although the elevator has been extended it will be locked from going up to the new level until it opens.)

Construction work continues on the addition's brickwork, windows, and walls.
