Holland Hospital has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).  The designation follows months of rigorous review of the hospital’s personnel qualifications, equipment requirements, quality assurance, and quality control procedures.

“This is a significant accreditation that demonstrates our commitment to the highest quality breast imaging and excellent patient care,” explained Susan Ervine, MD, radiologist and co-medical director of Holland Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Services. “A number of quality-related measures must be met to obtain the designation, which includes accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.”

The ACR’s Gold Standard of Accreditation and Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) designation are only awarded to breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.  Of the 37,652 facilities in the United States to be accredited by ACR, only 3% have received the BICOE designation.  Peer-review evaluations by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field determine which facilities have met the nationally-accepted standards of care for designation.

In addition to the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation, the ACR has also recognized Holland Hospital’s breast MRI program with accreditation for meeting or exceeding quality assurance and safety guidelines.
