It was December 24, 2018... Holland Hospital Telehealth Assistant Elliott Johnson was enjoying lunch with family at Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant. After a bit, Elliott’s step-father, Craig Bell, got up to use the restroom. When entering, he found a 55-year-old man unconscious on the floor.
Craig called out for help from Elliott and restaurant manager, Kimberly Todd. Craig and Elliott immediately began CPR and chest compressions, while Kimberly called 9-1-1. In minutes, first responders from the Holland Fire Department were on scene and deploying an automated external defibrillator and the American Medical Response (AMR) team began providing Advanced Life Support treatment. The patient, Gordan, had experienced sudden cardiac arrest. He was transported to Holland Hospital’s Emergency Department where a team of doctors swiftly began administering care. Gordon had suffered a heart attack.
Fast forward to March 25, 2019; Gordon is back at Boatwerks standing with his wife in a banquet room. Alongside them are fire department and AMR first responders as well as Elliott Johnson, Craig Bell and Kimberly Todd. It was a reunion three months in the making.
“Because of this community, I am standing here today,” Gordon said. “I am in a room full of heroes and I am so thankful,” he added.
Holland Fire Captain Chris Tinney and Mayor Nancy DeBoer echoed those remarks with a special presentation. For their quick thinking and swift actions, Elliot, Craig and Kimberly received the Community Lifesaving Award from the Holland Department of Public Safety.
“All steps were promptly taken in the Chain of Survival,” said Capt. Tinney. “This proves that with basic CPR knowledge and proper training, success stories are possible.” he added.
Many are describing the situation as a true Christmas miracle. Elliott said he was just doing his part but followed up by saying, “It is an honor to receive the Community Lifesaving Award from the City of Holland."
