Holland Hospital Earns Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals Award

Thomson Reuters yesterday released its annual study identifying the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance.  Holland Hospital is the only hospital from the western Michigan area to make the list.  This is the seventh consecutive year Holland Hospital has been chosen by Thomson Reuters as a 100 Top Hospital.

“We are the only Michigan hospital in the ‘medium size’ category, and we are among the top 2% of hospitals in the country which have earned this designation,” says Mark Pawlak, Holland Hospital Vice President of Ancillary Services and Quality.  “The commitment of our medical staff and all our employees to excellence provides residents of the Lakeshore with direct and local access to one of the best hospitals in the country.”

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia.  Researchers evaluated 2,886 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals using public information including Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.

“The Top 100 analysis factors in metrics representing several high-impact characteristics including clinical quality, patient satisfaction, patient safety, complication and mortality rates,” adds Pawlak.  “To make this list seven years in a row validates our tireless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our organization.”

Holland Hospital serves the health care needs of the greater Holland area and surrounding communities throughout Ottawa and Allegan counties with a 189-bed main campus and numerous off-site locations, more than 300 physicians, and a 2,000-strong hospital team that includes 550 registered nurses. Holland Hospital was the first hospital in West Michigan to receive Magnet Hospital designation.  More recently, the Hospital became DNV Healthcare ISO 9001:2008 certified.
