Da Vinci 5 Surgical System

HOLLAND, Mich., May 26, 2026 — Holland Hospital is at the forefront of surgical innovation with the recent acquisition and installation of the Intuitive da Vinci 5® surgical system. Designed to further advance minimally invasive care, this new platform showcases the hospital’s commitment to delivering superior clinical outcomes and a streamlined experience for patients and surgeons alike.

The da Vinci 5 is the most advanced and integrated technology in the da Vinci portfolio, joining the ranks of the X, Xi and SP systems. This versatile platform will be utilized across a range of minimally invasive specialties, including bariatric, general, gynecological and urological.

“Holland Hospital is committed to providing the highest quality care to its patients by being equipped with exceptional tools to serve our community,” said Melissa Spooner, vice president and chief nursing officer at Holland Hospital. “The acquisition of the da Vinci 5 is a testament to our commitment, and we are proud to offer this technology to patients throughout West Michigan.”

Featuring more than 150 new design innovations, the da Vinci 5 expands upon core robotic features such as wristed instruments, 3DHD visualization, intuitive motion and an ergonomic
design. As with all da Vinci systems, the surgeon remains 100% in control, with the technology translating their hand movements into smaller, more precise actions inside the patient’s body. Key enhancements include:

  • A first-of-its-kind feature that allows surgeons to feel the tension on tissue, potentially reducing the force applied during surgery.
  • Optimized vision that delivers truer colors and higher resolution for the most realistic 3D image available in robotic surgery.
  • Enhanced ergonomics with improved design for greater surgeon comfort and optimal surgical viewing.
  • Advanced computing power, which features more than 10,000x the computing power of the previous da Vinci Xi to deliver actionable data and insights.

The da Vinci 5 system is designed to blend seamlessly into surgical workflows, offering a platform that has the capacity to incorporate ongoing software and hardware enhancements. By investing in this technology, Holland Hospital continues to elevate regional standards for surgical precision and patient recovery.

“The da Vinci 5 is a significant step forward because of the integrated Force Feedback technology,” said G. Dane Fritz, MD, general surgeon at Holland Hospital. “By allowing us to feel the resistance of delicate tissue through the robotic console, we can perform complex maneuvers with a higher degree of refinement. This level of precision, combined with the enhanced 3D visualization, directly supports our goal of minimizing tissue trauma and accelerating the healing process for our patients.”

Reflecting its ongoing focus on safe, high-quality care, Holland Hospital’s patient experience honors accompany other recent achievements, including being recognized by Healthgrades as the only hospital in Michigan to receive the Outpatient Joint Replacement Excellence Award and the Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award in 2026 and most recently being named among America’s top-performing hospitals for patient experience, earning the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award for 18 years.

“Our ability to offer advanced minimally invasive options reflects our vision to be a leader in West Michigan,” added Spooner. “We look forward to the positive impact this will have on the health and recovery of our community.”
