Holland Hospital Boven Birth Center named Level II Maternal Care Verified Facility
HOLLAND, Mich., Jan. 21, 2025 — Holland Hospital has been recognized for the level of care it provides for women through pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center has been named a Level II maternal care verified facility by The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification program, offered in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
As a Level II facility, Holland Hospital has demonstrated its ability to care for low to high-risk pregnancies, including the detection, stabilization, and management of maternal-fetal or neonatal problems that occur during the antepartum, intrapartum, or postpartum period.
As part of the verification process, Holland Hospital underwent a comprehensive on-site review in October 2024 to verify the level of care provided. During the visit, Holland Hospital’s maternity care capabilities were evaluated along with a review of compliance policies.
“We were excited to welcome the Joint Commission on-site at Holland Hospital and honored to receive Level II verification,” said Nicole Huisman, director of Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center.” We look forward to continuing to provide our community with exceptional, high-quality obstetrical care.”
The MLC Verification program provides an objective assessment of a facility’s capabilities and verifies that a hospital has the expertise, equipment and resources in place for a patient’s specific needs and risk level. Verification also confirms that there are agreements in place for situations when complications arise so the mother can be transferred to a higher-level facility with the appropriate level of care.
In addition to MLC verification, Holland Hospital has continually earned top ratings from the Michigan Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Care (MI-AIM) for excellence in addressing maternal hemorrhage, hypertension, and sepsis. This achievement reflects the collaborative effort among our birthing center staff and OB providers to improve health outcomes.
Boven Birth Center provides personalized care, natural birth and pain management options, breastfeeding support, a special care nursery, and 24/7 in-house obstetric hospitalist coverage. Holland Hospital’s obstetric emergency department is available to meet the needs of patients experiencing unexpected obstetric complications.
The MLC Verification program was developed using ACOG’s Levels of Maternal Care Obstetric Care Consensus (OCC) clinical guidance, which includes comprehensive uniform definitions, a standardized description of maternity facility capabilities and personnel, and a framework for integrated systems that address maternal health needs.
