5K Run and Walk for Kids and Families to Benefit School Nurse Program

HOLLAND, Mich., Sept. 4, 2025 — The Holland Hospital School Nurse Fun Run is back for its 13th year, inviting families to lace up their running shoes for a great cause. Since 2013, this popular 5K and 1.5-mile run/walk event has raised nearly $383,500 for the hospital’s School Nurse Program, which provides vital medical support to students throughout Lakeshore communities.

“The School Nurse Fun Run is more than just a race; it's a celebration of our community's commitment to the health of our children,” said Colleen Perdok, fund development coordinator at Holland Hospital. “Every dollar raised goes directly to support our incredible school nurses, who are vital to the well-being of thousands of students. We hope everyone comes out to run, walk, and show their support.”

The Holland Hospital School Nurse Program serves more than 13,000 students across 29 schools, ensuring they have access to immediate medical care. Beyond treating scraped knees and administering daily medications, these dedicated registered nurses manage chronic diseases, provide referrals, and address the physical, emotional and social well-being of students. Their presence in schools is a crucial part of keeping our community's kids healthy and ready to learn.

“School nurses are trusted health care providers who meet students' physical and emotional needs,” said Hendrina Cupery, manager of Holland Hospital’s School Nurse Program. “They are a bridge between home, school, and other health care providers, often being the first medical professional a student sees. The opportunity to care for our students is an honor we don't take for granted.”

Established in 1998, the program serves K-12 students in 29 schools in the greater Holland area. During the 24-25 school year, school nurses:

  • Had over 38,000 office visits with students
  • Administered over 27,000 medications
  • Performed more than 7,000 procedures, including urine catheterization, blood glucose monitoring, and g-tube feedings
  • Implemented over 350 emergency action plans
  • Completed more than 500 student referrals
  • And had over 23,000 contacts with parents and staff

Students can enter the School Nurse Fun Run for free by committing to a personal health goal, such as improving their eating habits or starting a new wellness activity. Use code: funrun25 during registration. The event is a great value for the whole family, as adult registration is only $20.
