HOLLAND, Mich., Aug. 26, 2025 — With the new school year upon us in West Michigan, Holland Hospital primary care provider Benjermen Blackmer, DO, stresses the importance of scheduling a back-to-school health check-up to prepare children for the classroom.
“Back-to-school season isn't just about new backpacks and school supplies; it's also a crucial time to ensure a child's health is in check,” said Dr. Blackmer. “These check-ups are more than just a quick physical; they're an opportunity for a comprehensive look at a child’s physical and emotional well-being before the busy school year begins. Being seen means we can track their growth, address any concerns, and make sure they are fully prepared to learn and thrive.”
Dr. Blackmer emphasizes the importance of these visits for ensuring children are properly vaccinated. “Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to protect children from preventable diseases,” he said. “With recent reports showing declining vaccination rates in our area, it's more important than ever to make sure your child is protected against diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough, which can spread quickly in a school environment.”
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), vaccination rates for children ages 19 to 36 months have fallen below the 70% threshold in more than half of Michigan's counties, including Ottawa County. These declining immunization rates increase the risk of outbreaks of preventable diseases such as measles and whooping cough within schools and communities.
Holland Hospital offers a network of primary care providers, including family medicine providers, to meet the diverse needs of the community. To find a provider or schedule a back-to-school check-up, please call (616) 394-3200 or visit hollandhospital.org.
