HOLLAND, Mich., Dec. 2, 2025 — Holland Hospital is proud to announce the expansion and enhancement of its comprehensive Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine Program, offering West Michigan patients access to advanced, hospital-based treatment for chronic and complex wounds. This expansion includes the launch of state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in a newly remodeled suite, significantly elevating the level of specialized care available to local residents.

The enhanced program is led by recently appointed Medical Director Lee Ruotsi, MD, a nationally recognized and highly respected wound care and hyperbaric medicine specialist. Dr. Ruotsi is board certified in Wound Care and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, bringing a wealth of expertise to the region. His prior experience includes teaching positions in multiple residency programs and directing the Wound Care Fellowship at Catholic Health System Hospitals in Buffalo, NY.

“This expansion ensures our patients will receive the most advanced, evidence-based treatments available, in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy,” said Dr. Lee Ruotsi. “The entire treatment process will be delivered by a cohesive, interdisciplinary team, trained in current best practices.”

Holland Hospital Would Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine provides comprehensive care for a wide range of hard-to-heal wounds, including:

  • Pressure injuries (bedsores)
  • Venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers
  • Burns
  • Radiation tissue damage
  • And post-surgical and vascular wounds
  • Among others

With the introduction of HBOT in a newly remodeled, dedicated suite, local patients no longer need to travel out of town for this specialized treatment. HBOT involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment, dramatically increasing the amount of oxygen carried by the blood to promote healing, fight infection and support tissue repair for certain chronic wounds.

Holland Hospital’s multidisciplinary approach ensures patients receive a seamless continuum of care. The expert team includes advanced practice providers Erin Wisniewski, NP, and Janessa Engelhard, NP, certified wound and ostomy nurses, and specialists such as Podiatrist Philip Watkins, DPM. Patient care is closely coordinated with a network of specialists, including:

  • Advanced practice providers
  • Certified wound and ostomy nurses
  • Physicians specializing in wound healing, hyperbaric medicine and podiatry
  • Specialists from infectious disease
  • Specialists from plastic surgery
  • Specialists from peripheral vascular cardiology

The program emphasizes accessible care eliminating the travel burden associated with seeking this specialized level of wound and hyperbaric medicine care outside of the immediate community.

Services offered include cellular tissue products, negative pressure wound therapy, vascular evaluation and optimization, specialized dressings, and debridement, along with vital patient education for self-care and prevention.

The newly expanded Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine service was made possible by a generous donation by Priscilla Becker. “In loving memory of my husband, Raymond C. Becker, this new facility will benefit local patients for many years to come,” said Priscilla.
