Patient Navigator Added to Assist Breast Cancer Patients

Holland Hospital is pleased to welcome and introduce Alecia Jones, BSN, RN, OCN, as the Hospital’s new Breast Health Patient Navigator.

In this newly created position, Jones will serve as a liaison between breast cancer patients, physicians and other caregivers to help coordinate overall care. “The patient navigator is the glue that holds all the pieces of the puzzle together,” Jones explains.  “During what can be a confusing and frightening time for patients, I will be there every step of the way to discuss the diagnosis in detail and make sure patients understand their treatment and stay on track with their plan.” Jones brings with her 25 years of experience in cancer care, including serving as a certified oncology nurse with Lakeshore Area Radiation Oncology Center in Holland.  She will make initial contact with cancer patients at the time of their biopsy or at the surgeon’s office.  Jones will then remain involved throughout the patient’s course of care and for follow-up. The new patient navigator position complements Holland Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Services program, which was launched in 2013.  “A breast cancer diagnosis is difficult to hear and absorb,” says radiologist Susan Ervine, MD, co-director of the Breast Services program.  “We know from experience that patients need help in preparing for treatment and will benefit from guidance along the way.”  Holland Hospital’s Breast Health Services program is located at 844 South Washington Ave. in Holland.
