Mammograms That Deliver Less Pain and More Gain

Holland Hospital now offers SmartCurveTM

Despite their critical role in detecting breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages, mammograms are not a cakewalk for many women. In fact, about seven out of 10 report experiencing some degree of pain during mammography. Discomfort is a leading reason why women avoid scheduling this potentially lifesaving screening.

The good news is, Holland Hospital now offers SmartCurve™—a reason for women with mammogram anxiety to take comfort. SmartCurve™’s curved design distributes pressure more evenly over the breast to reduce pinching. Without compromising image quality or accuracy, this system has been shown to improve comfort in 93 percent of patients who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression.

“Fear of pain prevents many women from scheduling their annual mammogram,” said Dr. Susan Ervine, Medical Director, Comprehensive Breast Services. “This can lead to a delay in breast cancer diagnosis. We see the SmartCurve™ paddle as a real game changer that will improve patient experience and decrease the anxiety associated with mammography.”

SmartCurve™ is available at all three Holland Hospital mammography locations, another testament to the hospital’s commitment to delivering the latest in breast health screening and diagnostic imaging.
