Joint Replacement Surgery

Holland Hospital’s Joint Replacement Center performs hundreds of hip, knee and shoulder replacements every year with excellent outcomes and high patient satisfaction.

Studies have shown joint replacement reduces pain and increases mobility in the majority of individuals who have the procedure, but surgery may not be right for everyone. Your joint replacement team at Holland Hospital will evaluate your condition, consider your age and activity level, answer any questions and address your concerns, giving you the answers that help you make an informed decision. Then we’ll design a customized care plan that meets your specific wishes and goals. To help you decide if joint replacement surgery is right for you, here are some key points to consider:

  • All pain, no gain. Those who truly need joint replacement have significant pain that makes it difficult to walk, climb stairs, stand, sleep or participate fully in everyday activities.
  • Low quality of life. Physical pain can be unbearable, but has the pain also affected your life emotionally? Does the pain and stiffness limit participation in activities you used to love? Does it influence your mood?
  • Damage to bones. An x-ray is often sufficient to make the diagnosis of osteoarthritis, and/or show damage to hips and knees. More specialized testing is available if warranted.
  • Deformity. As the joint wears, the alignment of your leg or your muscle balance may be affected, contributing to deformity at the hip or knee, or changes in the way you walk.
  • If it’s broke, then fix it. Have other treatments—such as medications, injections and devices, (e.g., walkers)—failed to manage your symptoms? Then it might be time to discuss the possibility of joint replacement with your doctor.

Recovery and Return Home

Advancements in surgical techniques and postoperative care mean that many patients return home to continue their recovery within one to three days. Our care team will work with you and your family to decide what’s safest for you, based on your individual needs, and arrange additional support and special equipment for home as needed. If a short stay in a skilled nursing facility is required, we’ll help coordinate and arrange it. Although full recovery may take months, most patients return to simple, everyday tasks within a few days, and move on to greater activity within six to 12 weeks.
