Intensive Care/ICU: Top Rated and Close to Home

Nobody wants (or plans) to experience a serious illness or injury, but if one happens, you need prompt, specialized medical expertise on your side.

Each year, nearly 2,500 seriously ill or injured patients are admitted to Holland Hospital’s intensive care and telemetry unit (ICU), where they receive the highest level of care delivered by a skilled, multidisciplinary team.

Holland Hospital’s top-rated safety standards, state-of-the-art technology and commitment to continued quality ensure immediate intervention for those facing potentially life-threatening conditions, such as:

  • Heart attack, congestive heart failure or other cardiovascular conditions
  • Stroke or acute neurological/neurosurgical issues
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or acute respiratory distress
  • Trauma
  • Multi-system failure
  • Unstable blood pressure
  • Kidney failure or complications with hemodialysis
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Postoperative abdominal or thoracic cases that require intensive care

A Profound Partnership

Holland Hospital is a partner of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center. The MHA Keystone Center brings together hospitals, and other state and national experts to collect and report data, and implements evidence-based best practices to improve patient safety and reduce health care costs in Michigan and beyond. This partnership has led to a number of proven practices that have further enhanced our intensive care delivery.

A Welcoming Care Approach

At Holland Hospital, we make it our priority to keep our patients and their families well-informed and updated regarding test results, treatment plans and next steps. We encourage patients and their health care advocates to stay as actively involved as possible in their evaluation of treatment options and any related decision-making.

In our intensive care and telemetry unit, we consider visitors part of their loved one’s care team, as well as part of our family. Along with private, family-friendly rooms, our ICU also offers visitors a lounge with comfortable seating, a vending area and even a shower. Smaller waiting areas give loved ones a private place to meet with physicians and other caregivers. Please contact (616) 394-3231 for current visitor guidelines.

While arriving in an ICU is almost always unexpected and can feel overwhelming, our caregivers are committed to delivering the expertise and the peace of mind patients and their families deserve. When those we care for are strong enough to return home, we also provide whatever ongoing support is necessary, from skilled rehabilitation to guidance on lifestyle modification.

A Multidisciplinary Team

Our nationally recognized intensive care/telemetry specialists are dedicated to identifying the best evidence-based practices and applying them to every patient’s care.

We believe that when it comes to intensive care, a team of medical experts working seamlessly together not only ensures the best outcomes, but also allows for the personalization of each individual’s care. The ICU team at Holland Hospital incorporates the expertise of:

  • Hospitalists (doctors who specialize in providing care for patients while they are hospitalized, rather than in an office setting)
  • Board-certified surgeons and specialist physicians
  • Nurses specializing in intensive care
  • Patient care assistants (professionals who deliver basic hygiene, comfort measures and other integral patient care tasks)
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
  • Care managers and social workers
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Chaplain and clergy members
