Early Spring Allergies

HOLLAND, Mich., April 11, 2024 — With pollen forecasts already reaching medium-risk pollen rates across West Michigan and as the warmest winter on record in the U.S. wrapped up, people are dealing with allergies earlier than usual. To help people breathe easier, Timothy McDonald, MD, from Holland Hospital Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy offers tips for managing allergies during an early spring and navigating a longer allergy season.

“The end of winter and the start of spring is always a wonderful time in West Michigan, but unfortunately, it can also trigger allergy symptoms for many,” says Dr. McDonald. “By taking proactive steps and knowing how to manage symptoms, you can minimize discomfort and enjoy the beautiful weather.”
Symptoms can range from itchy eyes and sneezing to wheezing and runny nose, but there are some ways to get ahead of these irritating symptoms. There are ways to minimize exposure and keep people from reaching for the tissue box, including

  • Removing the exposure to the allergens
  • Changing clothes when you get home or come inside
  • Changing your home air filters
  • Investing in a home air purifier
  • Closing your windows
  • Wearing a mask while outdoors
  • Using nasal irrigation
  • Talking to your doctor

For individuals experiencing severe allergy symptoms such as watery and itchy eyes or nasal congestion, Dr. McDonald emphasized the availability of various prescription medications. These medications can effectively target hard-to-control symptoms, and patients are encouraged to consult their doctor to explore options beyond over-the-counter remedies.

Additionally, immunotherapy offers a long-term solution for patients with allergic rhinitis. This treatment has the potential to significantly reduce, or in some cases, eliminate the need for any allergy medications altogether.

Holland Hospital Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) offers close-to-home access to a team of otolaryngologists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of health issues affecting the ear, nose, throat and neck, including allergy treatments.

Holland Hospital ENT providers are conveniently located at two West Michigan locations, at the main Holland Hospital campus and at Holland Hospital Medical Building in Zeeland. To request an appointment call (616) 393-2190 or visit hollandhospital.org/ent.
