The New Boven Birth Center: Where Technology Meets Tenderness

It’s a wrap––the three-phase renovation project of the Boven Birth Center is complete! To ensure moms-to-be continue to have a safe and exceptional birth experience, our new Boven Birth Center now features:

  • 21 private mother-baby rooms
  • 8 labor-delivery-recovery rooms
  • 2-bed post-anesthesia care unit
  • 2 operating suites
  • 4 private triage rooms
  • 2 nurses stations
  • Well-baby nursery
  • Special Care Nursery
  • Conference space and staff support areas

“The completion of the Boven Birth Center expansion marks the end of a three-year journey, but more importantly, the beginning of a vision coming to life as a best-in-class program that will serve families in our community for decades to come,” said Kathy Nania, RN, MS, administrative director of inpatient nursing and Boven Birth Center. “Our entire staff deserves special recognition for their flexibility and creativity in ensuring continued high standards of care were met throughout each phase.”

The newly renovated 33,713 square-foot unit will accommodate space for 2,200 births per year. The arrival of the new birthing center would not have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of many individuals, including EV Construction, formerly Elzinga and Volkers Construction Professionals.

“Dating back to the 50s, EV Construction and Holland Hospital have collaborated on countless projects that have made a meaningful and lasting difference in caring for our community,” said Joe Novakoski, PE, vice president of operations, EV Construction. “The challenging and rewarding renovation of Boven Birth Center has been no different. Though we’re excited to turn the birthing center back over to Holland Hospital, our team will miss the great staff who were a joy to work with during every phase.”

“This dream came alive as the result of incredible partnerships between our internal departments, our facilities services team, Boven Birth Center staff and providers, and all design and construction professionals involved,” Nania added.

Along the Lakeshore from Grand Haven to South Haven, Holland Hospital Boven Birth Center is the leading choice for moms-to-be. The completion of our new birthing facility allows Holland Hospital to grow with the surrounding communities and provide quality care and exceptional experiences well into the future.

In 1991, the Boven Birth Center was named in honor of Rena Boven, who formed the original five-member Holland Hospital nursing team with Superintendent Mable Miller in 1919. Boven dedicated 37 years of service to helping lead progress at Holland Hospital until her retirement in 1956.
