Staying Active Outside: My Top 5 List

Staying Active Outside: My Top 5 List

It's summer in Michigan! I am a Michigan native so I might be biased, but is there anything better? (Answer:  No.) So don’t let the warm temperatures lure you into sedentary habits like baking on the beach or lounging at the pool. There are plenty of ways to get active outside and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of a Michigan summer.

Here are my Top 5 Holland-area Summertime Activities:

# 5. Group cycling
Cover miles of summery scenery by going on a group bike ride. The Holland area boasts several great bike shops and some of them group rides throughout the week. Not ready for the Tour de Holland? That’s OK! Most rides split into groups of varying speeds to accommodate riders of all skill levels.

# 4. Stand up paddle boarding
While it might look intimidating, SUP boards are touted as a “full-body workout” and an excellent way to enjoy the water and stay active. As with any water activity, abide by basic water safety rules. For updates on water conditions and safety tips, visit

# 3. Nature centers
Did you know that you can observe 172 species of birds at the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland? You can also observe birds and other animals in their natural habitats at DeGraaf Nature Center. Both have family-friendly outdoor activities throughout the summer months and lovely trails to explore on your own.

# 2. Yoga in the Park
Get into your warrior poses while overlooking Lake Macatawa. Head out to Kollen Park on Saturday mornings (8-9 am). A yoga instructor leads a "drop-in" class for participants of all levels. And who knows? Depending on the temperature, it might actually be hot yoga!

# 1. Saugatuck Dunes State Park
My favorite place on Planet Earth. The trails here are a perfect blend of woods and beach with enough changes in elevation to feel like you’re getting a good workout. Start at any trailhead and end up at the beach. Again I ask: does it get any better than this?

What special activities do you most enjoy in the summer months?
