A nationwide clinical trial sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke found that in the case of ischemic stroke (the most common type of stroke), patients treated with a tPA, a clot dissolving drug, within the three-hour therapeutic window were  more likely to have minimal or no disability after three months.

Unfortunately, many patients eligible for tPA do not receive it due to patients' delay in getting to the hospital. That is why calling 911 is essential. EMS personnel can provide interim care, gather patient information, transmit vital data and alert the hospital stroke team.

In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, diagnostic procedures for stroke may include the following:
  • Computed tomography scan (also called a CT or CAT scan).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Radionuclide angiography.
  • Computed tomographic angiography (CTA)
