Diagnosis

Your orthopedic surgeon will assess the damage to your shoulder through a series of tests to determine whether a shoulder replacement is the best choice for you. A physical examination to evaluate your shoulder starts by testing your range of motion, the strength and stability of your shoulder and tenderness or swelling.

To determine the precise location and severity of damage, diagnostic tests may include X-rays, MRIs or CT scans. These help your doctor see how your joints come together, reveal any bony defects or deformity and provide other information.

Should your condition require shoulder surgery, your surgeon determines what is the best option for you. Prior to surgery you can also expect standard preoperative tests including blood work, a cardiogram, urine sample and chest X-ray. These tests check to see if you are healthy enough to undergo surgery. Patients may also be required to stop taking certain medications until surgery is over.
