Coordination of your hospital stay is provided by a registered nurse Care Manager. Throughout your hospitalization, your Care Manager will monitor your progress, address any concerns, and help you plan for your recuperation.

If your needs continue beyond the hospital stay, the Care Management staff has an established network of contacts with community organizations that can assist people with such services as home-care nursing, obtaining medical supplies, and many other services. Your Care Manager can assist you by making the necessary contacts.

If you or your family has difficulty adjusting to your illness and the anxiety of your hospital stay, a social worker from the department of Care Management is available to you. The social worker's role is simply to help patients and loved ones adjust to their situation, especially if social and emotional issues complicate matters. A social worker is usually located on the patient floor or can be contacted at ext. 3239 ((616) 394-3239).

Chaplain & Clergy

The chaplains of Holland Hospital, along with On-Call area clergy are an integral part of Holland Hospital’s healing team and are available to care for those who have a faith community as well as those with no formal religious affiliation.

The hospital’s chaplains are available 24 hours a day to provide spiritual assistance, sacramental ministries, advance directive consultation, consultation concerning ethical care, and other support services – or to just stop by a patient's room for a friendly chat.

During daytime hours, chaplains can be reached at (616) 394-3360 or 3362. After 5:00 p.m. or on weekends, your nurse or hospital operator can contact the chaplain on-call for that evening or weekend. If requested, chaplains will also contact your pastor, priest, rabbi or congregation representative to let them know you are a patient here.

Clinical Dietitians

The hospital’s registered dietitians work closely with your doctors, nurses and other members of the health care team to provide nutritional care and education. Through a vast selective menu, the registered dietitians and clinical nutrition assistants will work with you to accommodate your specific needs.

Hospitalists

Hospitalists are physicians who work full-time in the hospital. They specialize in providing care for patients while they are hospitalized. They do not see patients in an office setting. Hospitalists work closely with your primary care physician to help manage your care while you are a patient at Holland Hospital.

Laboratory

State-of-the-art testing is performed by certified medical technologists and phlebotomists from Holland Hospital’s laboratory—which is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks (among other regulatory organizations) to ensure the highest standards of testing. Many results are available in four hours or less.

Nursing Staff

Twenty-four-hour nursing care is provided by a team of registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and unit technicians. Throughout your stay, an RN will lead the team in monitoring your condition, assessing needs, and coordinating your nursing care.

Patient Education

We feel that education about your illness or injury is crucial to your recovery as you leave the hospital. Your nurse will provide you with education throughout your stay. In addition, depending on your recovery needs, you may get a visit from the hospital’s Patient Education Coordinator, who will discuss information critical to your health and recovery.

Physicians

The doctor who admits you is responsible for directing your care throughout your hospital stay. He or she will direct all arrangements for medication, special diets, laboratory tests, therapy and/or other treatments. Your doctor, as the coordinator of your treatment program, should be consulted if you have any questions about your illness or injury. Holland Hospital is proud of the high quality and professional medical care provided by the more than 300 physicians on staff representing more than 36 health care specialties.

Rehabilitation Services

Depending on your illness or injury, your doctor may prescribe physical or occupational therapy to begin during your hospitalization. The therapist aims to increase patients' mobility, reduce their pain, and teach patients and caregivers simple exercises to perform in the hospital and after discharge. Patients who experience difficulty swallowing or speaking may also receive a visit from a speech therapist.

Volunteers

Holland Hospital is fortunate to have more than 500 committed and trained volunteers to give their time and talents to our patients. A volunteer may visit your room to deliver meal trays or to bring flowers or mail. A volunteer may also assist you with internal transports and discharge from the hospital.
