Osteoporosis—or porous bone—is a complex disease, which can develop a long time before symptoms appear. In patients whose bones continue to thin, minor bumps or falls can result in a “fragility fracture” of the spine, hip or other skeletal site. Such fractures are not only painful and frustrating but can lead to other serious, life-threatening or disabling events. Osteoporosis is usually described as "thinning of the bones" and can occur with aging, but also with many other medical conditions. Because of this, it's possible for significant bone loss to occur in younger people. The good news is, osteoporosis is a condition that is treatable at any age. Even in patients who have experienced fragility fractures, prompt and appropriate treatment is able to prevent future fractures in most patients. Holland Hospital's Bone Health Services is here to ensure you receive the kind of expert diagnosis and treatment that has been shown to prevent future fractures and keep your bones healthy.
The Holland Hospital Bone Health Program applies the most recent medical breakthroughs and recommendations to help you attain the strongest bones possible.

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures have been identified as major public health problems by the US Surgeon General.  Approximately 80% of patients do not currently receive appropriate follow up care.

Own the BoneOwn the Bone is a national program that seeks to reduce incidence of future fractures and impact of osteoporosis.  The Own the Bone program is guided by nationally-recognized bone health experts in orthopedic surgery, endocrinology, rheumatology, women's and family health as well as gerontology.  Holland Hospital's participation in Own the Bone is part of our commitment to the health and care of our community.  The program provides a simple, easy-to-use tool to enable us to identify, evaluate and treat fragility fractures and coordinate patient care.  Read more about Own the Bone.
