Ear, Nose & Throat

Comprehensive Care, Close to Home

While the term otolaryngology may be difficult to spell and pronounce, the importance of this specialty is easier to understand than you might at first think. If you’re somebody who frequently suffers from plugged ears, a runny nose and/or a sore throat, you may be suffering from something more serious than the common cold.

Otolaryngologists are doctors who diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the ears, nose and throat. These specialists are often referred to as ear, nose and throat (or ENT) specialists. Sinus and ear infections, hearing loss, and other disorders related to the head and neck are conditions that impact quality of life for millions of Americans, young and old alike.

The good news is, thanks to our partnership with Lakeshore Health Partners Ear, Nose & Throat, Holland Hospital offers access to comprehensive ENT care. Best of all, this full continuum of care is delivered close to where you work, play and live.

What is an ENT Specialist?

Otolaryngologists or ENT specialists help treat problems of the ear, nose and throat, as well as various conditions affecting areas of the head and neck—from swimmer’s ear to tonsillitis to balance issues.

Along with graduating from medical school, a board-certified ENT has also completed at least five years of specialty training. ENT doctors are experts in the medical and surgical management of conditions of the ear (e.g., ringing in the ears, balance disorders, ear infections); conditions affecting the nose, nasal cavity and sinuses; conditions of the throat; and other ENT-related conditions like diseases, tumors, trauma, and deformities of the head, neck and face.

Many ENT specialists have received additional extensive training in pediatric otolaryngology, otology/neurotology/audiology, allergy, facial and plastic reconstructive surgery, rhinology, and other subspecialty areas.
