Common symptoms of heart failure include:

  • Shortness of breath with activity which continues into rest time
  • Swelling of the legs, feet or ankles (edema)
  • Swelling of the abdomen
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular or rapid pulse
  • Erratic heart beat (heart palpitations)
  • Fatigue, weakness or faintness
  • Indigestion
  • Decreased alertness or concentration
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Distended neck veins
  • Decreased urine production

Physical examination may also reveal:

  • Fluid around the lungs
  • Irregular heartbeat
