Call Button

If you need assistance at any time, press the nurse-call button near your bed. This immediately alerts the nurses station, and a staff member will respond to your request.

Chapel

Patients and guests are welcome to visit the hospital’s Chapel of Hope, located on the main level, for prayer and meditation at any time. The chapel is a place of serenity for all people, regardless of faith or religion.

Healing Environment

Holland Hospital recognizes that the healing of mind, body and spirit are all-important and often interrelated. Learn about our Healing Environment programs, which bring the healing powers of art, music, nature, massage and pet therapy to our patients and staff.

Hospital Computers

There are mobile computers throughout the patient care units. Holland Hospital’s physicians, nurses and other health care staff document any treatment, medications and other necessary information on patients' electronic medical records. If you see a computer in your room, please note that it is for the health care professionals’ use — not for personal use. If you have children visiting, please make sure they do not use the computer.

Identification Band

All patients are issued wrist bands at admission. The bands provide positive patient identification for hospital staff serving you, and thereby provide protection for you. You may receive other bands as well, and should wear them at all times while at the hospital.

Interpreters Program

Cultural and language barriers should not get in the way of quality medical care. The Patient Registration Department provides interpretation services at no cost 24 hours a day for patients and family members who speak limited or no English. Spanish interpreters trained to understand medical concerns are available on-site at all times; interpreters representing more than a dozen other languages are available as needed. To arrange for interpreting services, please call ext. 3341 (394-3341).

Mail / E-mail

Volunteers deliver mail and printed e-mails to patients’ rooms on a daily basis.

Cards and letters should be addressed to:

Patient name (and room # if known)

Holland Hospital

602 Michigan Ave.

Holland, MI 49423

Tell friends and relatives to use E-mail a Patient on our home page.

Newspapers

The Holland Sentinel is available at the Coffee Cove, located in the main-level lobby. The Grand Rapids Press is available at the main-level entrance, across from the elevator.

Notary Service

Several members of the hospital staff are licensed notaries, and their services are available to all patients free of charge. To arrange for notary service, please ask your nurse.

Patient Room

Room assignment at Holland Hospital is based on your admitting diagnosis and the bed availability on the day you arrive. Private (single bed) and semi-private (two beds) rooms are available. Whenever possible, we will attempt to honor requests for specific room accommodations.

Personal Items

We want patients to be as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. You are welcome to bring your own sleepwear and toiletries. For articles such as glasses, hearing aids and dentures, it is helpful if you label the case or container with your name and place the items in your bedside stand when not in use. Please do not place them on your food tray or bed linen. Patients are responsible for these items. For safety reasons, do not bring razors or personal electrical appliances such as radios or hair dryers; battery-operated or cordless appliances are acceptable.

If you have valuable items with you, please send them home with a family member or friend. If this is not possible, request to have the items kept in the hospital safe. Holland Hospital is not responsible for items of value unless they are deposited in the safe.

If, after discharge, you find that you have left something behind, call the Security Office at (616) 494-4225. We will make every effort to locate lost items.

Safety & Security

Holland Hospital works to ensure the safety of all people in our care and the security of patient health information. More>

Smoking Policy

Holland Hospital is a smoke-restricted environment. This policy recognizes that smoking is both a proven health hazard and a safety risk and requires all patients, visitors and staff to refrain from smoking while in the hospital or on any hospital grounds – including parking lots and door entrances – with the exception of designated smoking locations. Please ask your nurse or other Holland Hospital staff member to direct you to designated areas. Your cooperation is appreciated.

There are smoking aids (gum, nicotine patches) available if you have difficulty abstaining from smoking while in the hospital. We encourage you to request assistance from your nurse.

Telephones / Cell Phones

Telephones are provided in each room for patients to use at any time. Instructions are printed on phones.

Outgoing calls – For local calls, dial 7-1 (wait for dial tone) and then the number. There is no charge for local calls. Long-distance calls may be placed by charging them to your home phone, a third party, a telephone calling card, or by calling collect. Simply dial 7-2-0 and then the area code and number; a recorded voice will give further instructions.

Incoming calls – Holland Hospital’s main switchboard is available at (616) 392-5141. Incoming calls through the switchboard will be transferred to your room between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. If you do not want calls forwarded, please ask your nurse to hold your calls or turn off the ringer.

You may instruct friends and relatives to telephone your room directly by using the number found on your telephone. Patients are free to give this number out, but to protect privacy, hospital operators are not permitted to give room phone numbers to callers.

Turn off cell phones – Cell phones and other personal transmitting devices (including pagers and PDAs) may not be used in any patient care area and should be turned off. These devices may interfere with the operation of medical equipment. (Health care providers use a specially designed phone to prevent interference.)

TDD service – Holland Hospital has a TDD (Telephone Device for the Deaf) unit available for patient and public use. Please ask your nurse if you require this service.

Wireless Fidelity (WiFi)

Holland Hospital has a wireless network that makes Internet access available to patients and guests in all areas of the hospital, including the Café, Coffee Cove, all waiting areas and patient rooms. Patients and visitors are welcome to bring their own laptops; hospital computers are for staff use only. Unlike PDAs, pagers or cell phones, a laptop will not interfere with the functioning of medical devices. If a visitor should experience a dead-zone or need assistance, technical support from Information Systems is available Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
