January 18, 2010
Hi. The ER team at Holland Hospital took great care of me when I had to visit on 1/1/10 – what a way to start my new year. I fell in my garage that afternoon and ripped a two-inch gash in my right wrist including an artery. In short, it was not life threatening but more than gruesome enough for me.
Everyone I encountered was great – friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. One’s attention to medical care is definitely heightened when you are the patient!
In particular I want to denote the care I received from nurse Christine and Dr. Loos. There were others and I regret not be able to recall all their names.
They referred me to a hand surgeon in GR, but Dr. Loos essentially diagnosed accurately that I didn’t have any major nerve damage, no severed tendons, and that they would probably just seal the artery and stitch me up (11-12 stitches ultimately).
The stitches are already out and my wrist is healing fabulously.
Thank you again and what a blessing to have such excellent medical care so readily available in our community!
Sincerely,
Marc Anthony

September 1, 2009
Dear Sir/Madam:
I had the misfortune of needing to visit your emergency department while visiting from out of town. I was there on the evening of July 2, after a friend of mine suffered a dog bite. Your facility is very impressive, and I am sorry it has taken so long to send this note to you.
From the moment I walked in the door, I was greeted by helpful and courteous staff. Your facility impressed me with its cleanliness, as well as the professionalism of the staff. Being a healthcare provider from out of town, my first impression was positive, and so often, only the negative things are relayed to organizations.
Keep up the great work! Thank you for your time.

“My father was admitted with a stroke … The nurses, techs, doctors, and others were, without exception, caring and respectful of my dad, despite his limitations and his needs. They carried out their duties with professionalism sprinkled with genuine compassion …” expand/collapse
October 2008
Please allow me to express my thanks to the medical people in the ICU and 2-West. My father was admitted with a stroke on September 26. He is being transferred today to a rehab/nursing facility.
I was present nearly every day so I was in a position to observe his care repeatedly. The nurses, techs, doctors, and others were, without exception, caring and respectful of my dad, despite his limitations and his needs. They carried out their duties with professionalism sprinkled with genuine compassion. I left yesterday for the last time and saw your mission statement which speaks to treating people with compassion, respect, and dignity. I can say that this is indeed what my father and we, his family, experienced during our stay.
Thank you,

“[My daughter] said she wishes Holland could train staff at the larger hospitals in Boston on how to be professional and ‘Midwest friendly’ …” expand/collapse
July 2008
[My daughter] was raised in Holland and visited Holland Hospital as a youngster – and always had a great experience from professional yet friendly staff. This visit was no different. She said she wishes Holland could train staff at the larger hospitals in Boston on how to be professional and “Midwest friendly.” Her experience was extremely positive, despite totally unexpected events and not having her personal medical team to consult with.
Our family greatly appreciates the entire staff, nurses, ER staff and Dr. Sak, who helped Denise return to good health and back home to Boston.

“Last week my mother was admitted to emergency having suffered a massive stroke. Your attitude, compassion, and timely attention to her care was noticed and appreciated … We feel you were a part of our struggle and an important part of healing …” expand/collapse
May 3, 2008
To all at Holland Hospital,
Over the years Holland Hospital had developed somewhat of a reputation for having an institutional-type atmosphere. In the past several years I have noticed a change in the attitude. Last week my mother was admitted to emergency having suffered a massive stroke. Our family was overwhelmed with the quality of care she received. The doctors went out of their way to explain what had happened and what they felt would ensue. The support staff went beyond what would be expected of them in providing for our personal family needs. There was not one staff member that we were disappointed in. We were continually pleased as to the level of care she received, the effort to personalize her care, and thoughtfulness to the family in general.
Our families would like to thank all the people involved with my mother’s care. Your attitude, compassion, and timely attention to her care was noticed and appreciated … we wanted you to know. At our difficult time, you were there to help answer questions and attend to all of our needs. We feel you were part of our struggle and an important part of healing.
An important part of your job perhaps not often acknowledged but always respected is the kindness you put into caring. God bless you all for having done what you can never be paid for … CARING!

“By 10 p.m. I was in surgery for a partial hip replacement. I commend the entire emergency department for courteous, fast, efficient work …” expand/collapse
April 7, 2008
Dear Friends,
On March 27 I was admitted to Holland Hospital with a fractured right hip. I fell at the Grand Rapids airport carousel at about 4:30 p.m. We drove directly to Holland far a 5:30 p.m. admission. By 10:00 p.m. I was in surgery for a partial hip replacement. I commend the entire emergency department for courteous, fast, efficient work.
My fifth floor stay until April 1 was great. All the personnel were helpful and encouraging. The food was excellent. All your TV ads are “right on.” I salute your efforts in being a patient-centered hospital.
Currently, I am in rehab and making good progress. Thanks for getting me off to a good start. I’m not only a Holland “rooter” but also a Holland Hospital “rooter.”
Sincerely,

“My brother and his family were in an accident and were transported to your hospital … [The staff’s] small deeds and interactions throughout the day made a very terrible and scary time for our family much more comforting …” expand/collapse
January 8, 2007
On January 7, my brother and his family were in an accident and were transported to your hospital. My family arrived shortly after their arrival. Every staff member we encountered from the moment we walked in the door was so very caring and friendly to all of us (there were quite a few of us and we ranged in age).
The emergency staff was very accommodating and generous to allow us back to see our family members. Our children were relieved that they were able to see for themselves that their cousin was in good health. I know seeing the familiar faces of cousins comforted our very scared little niece that was involved in the accident. The staff was professional, courteous and caring.
When we visited the Cafe, the supervisor came to let us know if we needed anything she would help us. Later, we were waiting while one family member was in surgery, the nutritional services supervisor came in to see us, bringing a cart of all sorts of snacks and drinks as well as a much-needed meal tray for my brother. She came back a second time, this time with crayons, paper and coloring books for our children. It was so thoughtful. The kids went right to work. They were able to make cards for their cousin and aunt.
All of these small deeds and interactions throughout the day made a very terrible and scary time for our family much more comforting to know that our injured family members were in such professional and caring hands.
Thank you for all of your kindness,

January 7, 2007
My daughter spent the last 11 days of November 2006 as a patient in Holland Hospital. She entered through the ER and most of her stay was in the Intensive Care Unit.
I’ve spent nearly 30 years working in larger health care systems in Kalamazoo. I was not sure at first if I would be comfortable in what I imagined to be a “small” hospital, and initially thought we might need to quickly move her home. I was mistaken, and it didn’t take me long to have complete confidence in Holland Hospital.
The ER team saved her life, and the ICU group returned her to health with their excellent care. We especially appreciated the expertise of Dr. Kraker and Dr. Conlon, who diligently managed her case. The nursing, respiratory and ancillary teams were very skilled, very professional and very kind to all of us. The focus on both high quality and compassionate care were obvious, and believe me, I was looking very closely at everything!
Even the cafeteria food was exceptional. Over the course of our stay our family had many pleasant meals there. We even had our Thanksgiving dinner in the Café; it certainly was a memorable holiday! There’s one cafeteria clerk named Jamie who was especially thoughtful. She was counting the days with us. All the special caring touches of the people at Holland Hospital helped us cope.
In separate letters I’ve thanked the ICU and chaplain staff for their kindnesses, and wish I could find a way to applaud the whole place. Know that Holland Hospital has made a lasting impression, and has given a special blessing to our family with the life-giving care it gave to my daughter.

August 24, 2009
I had gallbladder surgery today. My doctor was Dr. DeCook. I have never had a surgery before or been put under for any reason. My surgery was delayed for awhile and that was OK because I was nervous and not looking that forward to it. Well, I want to let you know – and I hope the doctor, nurses and all involved get to hear this – I was very much IMPRESSED with everyone I came in contact with, from the pre-op meeting to [discharge]. Everyone was upbeat and made me feel very comfortable. I joked with the nurses and they joked back and I had a good time with all.
Again, I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your staff and how this made this surgery a very enjoyable experience for me … Awesome job by all.
Thanks All Very Much!!!

“My wife was a patient on the fourth floor at the end of May. During that time she received absolutely the finest health care that any patient or their family could expect or imagine …” expand/collapse
June 12, 2009
To the Staff of 4 West:
I want to begin by apologizing for how tardy this little note is. My wife, Karen Page, was [a patient on the fourth floor for four days at the end of May]. During that time she received absolutely the finest health care that any patient or their family could expect or imagine. Unfortunately, over the past five years she has been a fairly frequent patient at Holland Hospital. The care has always been great on her other stays as well.
I wish I had had the presence of mind to jot down the names of everyone who provided Karen’s excellent health care, but I did not. Every one of you was so kind, caring, loving, attentive and professional at each of your various positions.
Thank you so very much for all that you did for both Karen and me.
Sincerely,
Tom (and Karen) Page
“Dad was a giant in our eyes … On behalf of my siblings, I wish to thank your staff for the dedicated service and loving care provided my father over the past few years …” expand/collapse
March 1, 2009
Dear Patti VanDort (Vice President of Nursing):
On behalf of my siblings, I wish to thank your staff for the dedicated service and loving care provided my father over the past few years. Dad was hospitalized on five occasions since the Spring of 2007. He most recently expired during a brief stay at Holland Hospital.
I am one of seven children of Richard and Mary Jane Young. During dad’s numerous admissions in the final years of his life my family became well acquainted with Holland Hospital and its staff. They were impressed with and greatly comforted by the care and attention to detail provided him on each of those admissions. His final stay at your hospital was especially comforting for them as they came to his bedside knowing well death was imminent.
The staff was incredible both in the Emergency Department and on 2 West. No other word can describe the concern towards detail and the level of compassionate care provided him by all. No other word can describe the emotional support and the kindness the staff offered my siblings, Margaret, and me during so emotionally challenging a time. We express our appreciation to all.
With my siblings yet to arrive, I maintained the nighttime vigil at dad’s bedside that first night. Sleep was evasive for me; dad was unresponsive yet required frequent suctioning due to congestion. Stephanie, as his nurse on 2 West, maintained the night watch. She was well-aware of dad’s anoxic event and unresponsive state.
Not knowing I was wide-awake as I lay on the couch near his bedside, Stephanie would quietly enter the room and softly, compassionately converse with dad, while offering him suction, moistening his mouth, and repositioning him. Her commitment to her professional calling was exemplary.
Daytime saw the transition of nursing care turned over to Sara. Her time conversing with family and comforting them, while attending to dad’s physical needs, was likewise most admirable.
Together these nurses epitomized what it means to be a Magnet hospital. We express our appreciation to them as well.
Dad was a giant in our eyes. Loving and supportive parents attain that stature as you know. But was most touching about my father, as he gracefully accepted his physical and mental infirmities, was that he never lost his zeal for smiling, laughing, and trying ever so valiantly to say something kind or supportive to us or to the many that cared for him over the years.
As a family we can only be left with the comforting words from the ancient meditations of Sirach 3:12-14 (New American Bible).
My son (daughter), take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives.
Even though his mind fail, be considerate with him; Revile him not in the fullness of your strength.
For kindness to a father will not be forgotten ... it will take lasting root.
Please extend our gratitude to all at Holland Hospital, nursing and support staff included, that touched his life during those five hospital stays over the past few years. For their kindness too will “take lasting root.”
With warmest regards as a representative of the Richard I. Young family,
David J. Young, MD

“C. spent up to 4 weeks in Holland Hospital before she was moved to Hospice … Seeing firsthand what our staff did to make my friend comfortable, both physically and spiritually, makes me very proud to work at Holland Hospital …” expand/collapse
December 24, 2008
My friend “C.” died yesterday from liver cancer. She was only 58. C. spent up to 4 weeks here in Holland Hospital before she was moved to Hospice a week ago. While here, she was on 4-West and TU [Telemetry Unit]. She also had lab work, CT scans, etc.
On behalf of C.’s family, I would like to share with you how pleased they were with her care. Everyone they came in contact with was compassionate, professional and discrete.
As I visited C. every day while she was here, I would like to share with you two acts of kindness by our staff that I am aware of and that made a huge difference in C.’s mental state.
It meant a great deal to her to see the outdoor little tree lit with white lights each night while she was in Room 7 of TU. One night they were not on, and she asked me to see if they could be turned on. I contacted Adam [ICU/TU manager] who promptly found that the timer was not working and had it fixed. C. was so pleased when she again saw the tree lit up.
Again, while she was in Room 7, she asked me to see if she could get a copy of the same TV guide that she had in her room on 4-West. I contacted Lu [4-West nursing manager] who promptly sent one to her.
My personal heartfelt thank you is extended to the nursing staff, hospitalists, spiritual care staff, radiology staff, unit techs, food service staff, laboratory staff, housekeeping and volunteers. These folks were instrumental in making C.’s last hospital stay a caring one.
Seeing firsthand what our staff did to make my friend comfortable, both physically and spiritually, makes me very proud to work at Holland Hospital.

February 2008
To EVERYONE on all shifts on AWESOME floor 4 West:
I just want to express my sincere thanks to all of you for the great care and treatment I received from you during my three day stay following urological surgery by Dr. Willoughby.
I was very nervous about the outcome of the surgery and was concerned about pain, recovery, treatment and results – would it be successful? Thanks to the very professional expertise and caring treatment by the doctors and YOU ALL, my concerns and pain were greatly minimized and I had confidence that the total results would be positive!!
I just completed my three week post-surgery visit with Dr. Willoughby on Wednesday. He, I and my wife are pleased with my recovery and lack of infection.
I owe a lot to you all for my positive recovery rate and for my positive attitude … thank you so very much for living up to your “Magnet” reputation! You all should be proud of your daily performance: your collective giving attitude and your striving towards excellence in the care and treatment of your patients.
Our prayers are that you all will continue to be so caring and that you will enjoy your work in good health.
We appreciate you all,
Alan and Kathy

"Please accept Nasifat's most heartfelt gratitude. Never in her life has she experienced the kindness that has been shown to her by American people during this emergency. In Russia, she most certainly would have died from this injury …” expand/collapse
November 26, 2007
I am writing this letter on behalf of my cousin, Nasifat Koichiev, relating to her stay at Holland Hospital the week of August 28, 2007.
Nasifat is visiting the US from Moscow, Russia, and she broke her hip while staying with our family (within the first 3 days of her visit). We rushed her to Holland Hospital thinking she might just have a terrible bruise and muscle injury. Unfortunately, it was a badly broken hip. Upon arrival at the hospital, I helped her check into Emergency. I had to do the translating for her and inform the hospital that she would be unable to pay for services (it was important for us to be completely honest about her financial situation).
Nasifat is a penniless, single mother who was able to visit because of gifts. She works as a street vendor and lives a subsistence lifestyle. Even American poverty is wealthy compared to her life. Nevertheless, Nasifat was treated with great respect and kindness by everyone in the emergency room and throughout her stay after hip replacement surgery. She was in awe of the cleanliness of the hospital (you have to understand what Russia is like to understand this) and of the technology. She thought the food was like what must be found in a fine restaurant (she has never eaten in a Russian restaurant because it would be financially impossible). Tell that to anyone who ever complains about the food!
While she was there, I worked with many fine people — the ER staff, Drs. Power and Dean (of Shoreline Orthopaedics), the nursing staff on the 5th floor, the social work department and the finance department. On her behalf, I inquired about financial support because is would be quite impossible for her to pay for the services she received. The finance staff were very kind and respectful. I filled out the paperwork for Nasifat and waited. On October 16, 2007, we received a letter from Patient Accounts that her request for assistance had been processed and that her debt would be “reduced by 100%,” leaving her balance to pay at zero.
Later that day, I explained what the hospital had decided and Nasifat was stunned … quite speechless. Then her eyes welled up and she cried. I cried with her. You cannot understand how difficult this situation has been for Nasifat.
Please accept Nasifat’s most heartfelt gratitude. Never in her life has she experienced the kindness that has been shown to her by American people during this emergency. She is totally overcome and still finds it hard to believe. Your kindness is so much appreciated … you have helped change the course of her life. In Russia, she would most certainly have died from this injury and she is well aware of that. She did not even know a hip replacement was possible.
Last week was Thanksgiving. We had a lot to be thankful for at our house and Nasifat understands “thankfulness” better now because of the many people who have helped her. For my part, I was proud of America and especially proud of the people of Holland. Our gratitude knows no bounds.
Sincerely,
Maryam Komejan

December 2008
I recently had a baby at Holland Hospital [and] wanted to write you to let you know how thankful my husband and I were for all of the excellent nursing support we received while at the Boven Birth Center.
Over the course of my stay, I had several different nurses that cared for me. There are three in particular that stuck out as going above and beyond for me and I wanted to make you aware of their excellent care!
Peggy was with me as I labored through the night. She took excellent care of me and got the back-up anesthesiologist to come in when I needed my epidural ASAP. Beth was there for the rest of my labor and the delivery of my son. We couldn’t have asked for a smoother delivery or for better care. Lastly, Amy cared for me and my son for the two nights following his birth. She went above and beyond in caring for both of us. Her kindness and sweet nature were very much appreciated.
I also wanted to quickly mention Amy in breastfeeding support. Her guidance and encouragement and follow-up have led to breastfeeding success!
Thanks again for such excellent staff. I tell everyone how pleased I was with the whole experience and with Holland Hospital!

“I’m writing in regards to one of your wonderful employees, Michelle, who was working in ultrasound. This is the second time I’d come in contact with her. She was my angel on both occasions …” expand/collapse
March 3, 2009
Dear Mr. Sowders (President & CEO):
I’m writing in regards to one of your wonderful employees, Michelle, who was working in ultrasound on January 13, 2009. This is the second time I’d come in contact with her. She was my angel on both occasions.
I fell on the ice on December 16, 2008, and I broke my right ankle for the third time and sprained my right knee. A month later, I ended up at Urgent Care [at the Lakeshore Medical Campus] on the north side, and they said it was a “must” that I go to Holland Hospital to have an ultrasound on my leg, as they thought I may have a blood clot. So, even though it was a wintery blizzard that evening with high winds, I made it to the hospital to have the ultrasound done on my leg, which gave me peace of mind. The main thing I remember was Michelle, who was so kind and caring. Yes, she was an angel to me!
She sent me a beautiful card, and asked me if I needed anything. She is so precious, kind and thoughtful. How many persons would do all this for someone they didn’t even know? Your hospital is so blessed to have her working there. I know I’m so very, very grateful!
A couple from Good Samaritan Ministries (who I’d just met that afternoon) had taken me to Urgent Care, and then on to Holland Hospital. They, too, were angels to me! God was certainly watching over me. I’ll always remember that afternoon and evening for truly being blessed.
Sincerely,
Janet Barker

“Typically my son would be kicking, screaming, and doing everything within his power to stop any such procedure. However, Danielle was phenomenal in talking with my son while she quickly obtained the blood sample …” expand/collapse
March 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to two of your employees: Linda and Danielle at the Lakeshore Medical Campus (Lab).
I took my 7-year-old son in for a blood draw and he was quite nervous, and had some anxiety about the procedure. The initial contact with Linda was very positive and greatly appreciated. Her demeanor, personality, and personal connection with my son really helped him to feel much more comfortable about the pending procedure.
Then, while in the patient care room my son’s anxiety heightened. However, once again the demeanor, personality, and personal connection of the technician or nurse who performed the blood draw were fantastic. Typically my son would be kicking, screaming, and doing everything within his power to stop any such procedure. However, Danielle was phenomenal in talking with my son while she quickly obtained the blood sample. Even though my son did raise his voice in opposition he offered little resistance, which totally shocked me.
I cannot say enough about these two employees. I personally thanked them at the time, but I feel compelled to let others know. Please let them know they are truly professionals at their jobs AND very kind and gentle with their patients.
Kind regards,
Garth B. Stafford

I would like to take this time to share with you a great experience I had with Angela, MS, PT, at your Rehabilitation Services – Northside location.
I was referred to your Rehabilitation Services to assist me with getting some lower back pain I was having under control. Angela was assigned to work with me. I was pleased at each appointment with the way she truly listened to my problems, asked many specific questions and had a sincere desire to help me. I was always treated as if I was her only patient for the day and was never rushed through an appointment. She took the time to ask about my family and interests at the first appointment and remembered these details at my last appointment. I mattered to her; she made it personal!
There are many health care service providers in West Michigan who claim to have the best “patient-centered” service but instead focus on volume in lieu of quality. Holland Hospital (specifically its dedicated employees like Angela) “walks the talk.” Please let Angela know that she has a very appreciative patient and I suspect if she keeps up this level of service will be very successful in all her professional endeavors!
Sincerely,

P.S. I’m happy to say my back is measurably improved as a result of Angela’s guidance!

To Whom It May Concern:
I want to let you know about my totally positive experience with my treatments at the Lakeshore Area Radiation Oncology Center. Everyone at the clinic went well up and above their duties to give me the best care possible.
The four techs – Linda, Karen, Marie and Bob – were all really top-notch and were wonderful at helping me through this difficult time in my life. There was always a pat on the back or a big hug whenever it was needed.
The rest of the staff there are wonderful as well. I felt more like family than I did a patient. There was always a smile there to welcome me, no matter what mood I was in when I went in for treatment.
Lastly, I would like to give kudos to Patti, your social worker. She was very helpful at helping me out whenever I needed to talk. Also, she helped me work out my financial needs.
To sum it all up for you – I have total confidence in the cancer radiation clinic. Kudos to them all! Thank you for the wonderful treatment.
