From Our Patients
Each year we receive many kind letters from patients and their loved ones thanking us for the care they received at Holland Hospital. These letters are important to us, as they help us better appreciate the experiences of our patients.
We have shared a sampling of these letters below, organized by hospital service. Letter writers’ names have been used only with their permission. Click on “expand/collapse” to read the entire letter, and to close it when finished.

“An admission into Emergency and an ensuing hospital stay is never anything to look forward to, but everyone involved certainly represented their professions and Holland Hospital to the highest degree, and for that I am thankful …” expand/collapse
March 2008
I was admitted to Holland Hospital in March 2008 and discharged a little over 24 hours later. I believe that when a job is well done, positive feedback is due.
My wife and I were very impressed by the prompt and in-depth attention given to us in Emergency: first by Admissions, then Dr. Holt and the attending nurse, Lisa, and later in the evening, the continued follow-up by Dr. Mathur. His calm demeanor and explanations were welcome indeed. After blood tests were taken, I was given an X-ray and later in the evening, a CT scan, after which I was admitted to the hospital’s ICU-TU Department.
There, over the course of the evening and into the next day, I was attended by nurses Amanda and Rayna. I can’t say enough about their consistent attention and professionalism. Later on Monday, I was given a stress echo test and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Frauenheim and his nurse, Deborah, and the same must be said of them. Their encouragement during the testing and positive manner went a long way to making a disconcerting event far less threatening.
In closing, I want to tell you how impressed my wife and I were by the overall experience. An admission into Emergency and an ensuing hospital stay is never anything to look forward to, but everyone involved certainly represented their professions and Holland Hospital to the highest degree, and for that I am thankful.
Sincerely,
Kirk F. Wright

“Thank you so much for taking such good care of my wife and easing the symptoms of her ‘viral gastroenteritis’ …” expand/collapse
August 21, 2007
To all the staff on duty in the emergency room:
Thank you so much for taking such good care of my wife and easing the symptoms of her "viral gastroenteritis.” She was really in a bad way when we arrived but within a very short time, Tiffany and Dr. Harris had made her comfortable and she began to recover from the dehydration and pain that she was experiencing. Both my wife and I have had numerous emergency room experiences with our parents over the years and the word that best describes most of them is frustrating. But your staff was very efficient, kind and expeditious in handling our problem. I hope we never have to avail ourselves of your services again, but rest assured that if we do we certainly won't dread it. Thank you all again!
Sincerely,
Richard & Diane Hall

“My brother and his family were in an accident and were transported to your hospital … (The staff’s) small deeds and interactions throughout the day made a very terrible and scary time for our family much more comforting …” expand/collapse
January 8, 2007
On January 7, my brother and his family were in an accident and were transported to your hospital. My family arrived shortly after their arrival. Every staff member we encountered from the moment we walked in the door was so very caring and friendly to all of us (there were quite a few of us and we ranged in age).
The emergency staff was very accommodating and generous to allow us back to see our family members. Our children were relieved that they were able to see for themselves that their cousin was in good health. I know seeing the familiar faces of cousins comforted our very scared little niece that was involved in the accident. The staff was professional, courteous and caring.
When we visited the Cafe, the supervisor came to let us know if we needed anything she would help us. Later, we were waiting while one family member was in surgery, the nutritional services supervisor came in to see us, bringing a cart of all sorts of snacks and drinks as well as a much-needed meal tray for my brother. She came back a second time, this time with crayons, paper and coloring books for our children. It was so thoughtful. The kids went right to work. They were able to make cards for their cousin and aunt.
All of these small deeds and interactions throughout the day made a very terrible and scary time for our family much more comforting to know that our injured family members were in such professional and caring hands.
Thank you for all of your kindness,
Tena Elias

“My daughter spent the last 11 days of November 2006 as a patient in Holland Hospital … I was not sure at first if I would be comfortable in what I imagined to be a ‘small’ hospital … I was mistaken, and it didn’t take me long to have complete confidence in Holland Hospital …” expand/collapse
January 7, 2007
My daughter spent the last 11 days of November 2006 as a patient in Holland Hospital. She entered through the ER and most of her stay was in the Intensive Care Unit.
I’ve spent nearly 30 years working in larger health care systems in Kalamazoo. I was not sure at first if I would be comfortable in what I imagined to be a “small” hospital, and initially thought we might need to quickly move her home. I was mistaken, and it didn’t take me long to have complete confidence in Holland Hospital.
The ER team saved her life, and the ICU group returned her to health with their excellent care. We especially appreciated the expertise of Dr. Kraker and Dr. Conlon, who diligently managed her case. The nursing, respiratory and ancillary teams were very skilled, very professional and very kind to all of us. The focus on both high quality and compassionate care were obvious, and believe me, I was looking very closely at everything!
Even the cafeteria food was exceptional. Over the course of our stay our family had many pleasant meals there. We even had our Thanksgiving dinner in the Café; it certainly was a memorable holiday! There’s one cafeteria clerk named Jamie who was especially thoughtful. She was counting the days with us. All the special caring touches of the people at Holland Hospital helped us cope.
In separate letters I’ve thanked the ICU and chaplain staff for their kindnesses, and wish I could find a way to applaud the whole place. Know that Holland Hospital has made a lasting impression, and has given a special blessing to our family with the life-giving care it gave to my daughter.

“I came in with the basic symptom that I passed out in the middle of a presentation, complicated by very high blood pressure …” expand/collapse
January 6, 2007
I am writing to praise and thank you for your assistance and service. I was amazed at the logistics that brought so many persons in such a tight and orderly sequence to process and diagnose the problem I came in with.
I came in with the basic symptom that I passed out in the middle of a presentation. This was complicated by very high blood pressure, since I had skipped my blood pressure medicine. I also had skipped my noon lunch before the presentation. But I was not rational enough in emergency to confess that.
So, all this absent information precipitated an extensive emergency search with CAT, MRI, ECHO, EEG and stress tests, and all the consultations from the doctors. They were looking for stroke possibilities and heart problems, along with any other possibilities.
I was given all these tests in 44 hours, cleared (negative in all) of tested causes, and discharged. I thank you for your logistical efficiency, your thoroughness and your general personal attention to many details along the way. I say again, I was impressed!
Thanks,
Darrell Franken, MDiv, MA, PhD

“We had the recent experience of visiting your emergency room on Christmas Day and again on December 26 … As a fellow health care administrator I know we do not always hear the positives, so wanted to be sure you received my comments …” expand/collapse
January 2, 2007
We had the recent experience of visiting your emergency room on Christmas Day and again on December 26. My father, 92 years old, had fallen and we needed to validate that there were no broken bones. Our experience on both occasions was excellent. Staff were courteous, professional and the facilities clean and well maintained. The nurse, Cathy, on Christmas Day was excellent as well as the nurse the next day, although I did not catch her name.
What I really want to emphasize with this letter is how outstanding Dr. Mike Page was as my father’s emergency physician. He obviously is an outstanding clinician and professional. Not only did he exemplify all the common courtesies to all of us, but he took the time with my father to hear his story, to assure his understanding and his comfort with his recommendations. He was exemplary. I work with many physicians and have never witnessed such compassion and professionalism as I did with Dr. Page on both visits. You and Holland Hospital are indeed fortunate to have him.
As a fellow health care administrator I know we do not always hear the positives, so wanted to be sure you received my comments. I want to commend you and your staff for our excellent experience in your Emergency Department, and ask that you commend Dr. Mike Page for his efforts. He was outstanding. Thank you.

“Typically my son would be kicking, screaming, and doing everything within his power to stop any such procedure. However, Danielle was phenomenal in talking with my son while she quickly obtained the blood sample …” expand/collapse
March 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to two of your employees: Linda and Danielle at the Lakeshore Medical Campus (Lab).
I took my 7-year-old son in for a blood draw and he was quite nervous, and had some anxiety about the procedure. The initial contact with Linda was very positive and greatly appreciated. Her demeanor, personality, and personal connection with my son really helped him to feel much more comfortable about the pending procedure.
Then, while in the patient care room my son’s anxiety heightened. However, once again the demeanor, personality, and personal connection of the technician or nurse who performed the blood draw were fantastic. Typically my son would be kicking, screaming, and doing everything within his power to stop any such procedure. However, Danielle was phenomenal in talking with my son while she quickly obtained the blood sample. Even though my son did raise his voice in opposition he offered little resistance, which totally shocked me.
I cannot say enough about these two employees. I personally thanked them at the time, but I feel compelled to let others know. Please let them know they are truly professionals at their jobs AND very kind and gentle with their patients.
Kind regards,
Garth B. Stafford

"Please accept Nasifat's most heartfelt gratitude. Never in her life has she experienced the kindness that has been shown to her by American people during this emergency. In Russia, she most certainly would have died from this inury." expand/collapse
November 26, 2007
I am writing this letter on behalf of my cousin, Nasifat Koichiev, relating to her stay at Holland Hospital the week of August 28, 2007.
Nasifat is visiting the US from Moscow, Russia, and she broke her hip while staying with our family (within the first 3 days of her visit). We rushed her to Holland Hospital thinking she might just have a terrible bruise and muscle injury. Unfortunately, it was a badly broken hip. Upon arrival at the hospital, I helped her check into Emergency. I had to do the translating for her and inform the hospital that she would be unable to pay for services (it was important for us to be completely honest about her financial situation).
Nasifat is a penniless, single mother who was able to visit because of gifts. She works as a street vendor and lives a subsistence lifestyle. Even American poverty is wealthy compared to her life. Nevertheless, Nasifat was treated with great respect and kindness by everyone in the emergency room and throughout her stay after hip replacement surgery. She was in awe of the cleanliness of the hospital (you have to understand what Russia is like to understand this) and of the technology. She thought the food was like what must be found in a fine restaurant (she has never eaten in a Russian restaurant because it would be financially impossible). Tell that to anyone who ever complains about the food!
While she was there, I worked with many fine people — the ER staff, Drs. Power and Dean (of Shoreline Orthopaedics), the nursing staff on the 5th floor, the social work department and the finance department. On her behalf, I inquired about financial support because is would be quite impossible for her to pay for the services she received. The finance staff were very kind and respectful. I filled out the paperwork for Nasifat and waited. On October 16, 2007, we received a letter from Patient Accounts that her request for assistance had been processed and that her debt would be “reduced by 100%,” leaving her balance to pay at zero.
Later that day, I explained what the hospital had decided and Nasifat was stunned … quite speechless. Then her eyes welled up and she cried. I cried with her. You cannot understand how difficult this situation has been for Nasifat.
Please accept Nasifat’s most heartfelt gratitude. Never in her life has she experienced the kindness that has been shown to her by American people during this emergency. She is totally overcome and still finds it hard to believe. Your kindness is so much appreciated … you have helped change the course of her life. In Russia, she would most certainly have died from this injury and she is well aware of that. She did not even know a hip replacement was possible.
Last week was Thanksgiving. We had a lot to be thankful for at our house and Nasifat understands “thankfulness” better now because of the many people who have helped her. For my part, I was proud of America and especially proud of the people of Holland. Our gratitude knows no bounds.
Sincerely,
Maryam Komejan

“It is difficult to say what my expectations were because, in spite of my age, this was my first stay in a hospital as a patient … For my part at least, I will be forever
grateful …” expand/collapse
March 18, 2007
I was a patient on 4-West [Medical/Surgical Floor] March 15-17, 2007. It is difficult to say what my expectations were because, in spite of my age, this was my first stay in a hospital as a patient. With the general knowledge that the reputation of Holland Hospital is very high, I would say that everything met my expectations.
The hospital staff, cooks, nurses, aides and everyone I came in contact with were very helpful and considerate. Working in a hospital atmosphere day in and day out must take very special people to give the care the patients need and give the extra to make lemonade out of lemons.
While my wife and I were counting the hours toward discharge, it was with the satisfaction that everything was being done to promote my medical discharge in the best health possible. I am sure that a patient’s desire to “escape” from the hospital can be disconcerting to the staff who are trying their very best to make the patient’s return to health as soon as possible. For my part at least, I will be forever grateful for the care I received, even though it may not have been as evident at the time as it should have been.
Sincerely,
Sam

“The one thing [my father] mentioned about his hospital visit was seeing a therapy dog. I and my dog are 'pet partners' in New York City and I was so pleased to hear him talk about that …” expand/collapse
August 11, 2007
I just wanted to thank you for having a pet therapy program in Holland Hospital. My father, who is 94 years old, had a procedure and was admitted for one night last week. The one thing that he mentioned about his visit was seeing a therapy dog. I and my dog are 'pet partners' in New York City and I was so pleased to hear him talk about that.
Again, thank you and please convey my appreciation to the hospital administration for allowing such a wonderful program to be active at Holland Hospital.

Rehabilitation Services
“I was pleased at each appointment with the way she truly listened to my problems, asked many specific questions and had a sincere desire to help me. I was always treated as if I was her only patient for the day …” expand/collapse
March 31, 2008
I would like to take this time to share with you a great experience I had with Angela, MS, PT, at your Rehabilitation Services – Northside location.
I was referred to your Rehabilitation Services to assist me with getting some lower back pain I was having under control. Angela was assigned to work with me. I was pleased at each appointment with the way she truly listened to my problems, asked many specific questions and had a sincere desire to help me. I was always treated as if I was her only patient for the day and was never rushed through an appointment. She took the time to ask about my family and interests at the first appointment and remembered these details at my last appointment. I mattered to her; she made it personal!
There are many health care service providers in West Michigan who claim to have the best “patient-centered” service but instead focus on volume in lieu of quality. Holland Hospital (specifically its dedicated employees like Angela) “walks the talk.” Please let Angela know that she has a very appreciative patient and I suspect if she keeps up this level of service will be very successful in all her professional endeavors!
Sincerely,
Michael D. Novakoski
President & Chief Operating Officer
Elzinga & Volkers, Inc.
P.S. I’m happy to say my back is measurably improved as a result of Angela’s guidance!
