Holland Hospital Offers Immunization Clinics this Fall
Keep Flu and Pneumonia at Bay
Flu season is still in the (not-too-distant)
future, but it's not too early to start
thinking about getting a flu shot. Though
unpredictable, flu season can begin
as early as October.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), the best way to avoid getting the
"bug" is to get a flu shot each year. October through
December is the best time to be vaccinated, as flu activity
usually peaks in the early months of the new year.
The CDC recommends the flu vaccination for
people who are at risk of complications from influenza,
including adults 65 years of age and older; all children
6-59 months of age; women who will be pregnant
during flu season; residents of long-term care facilities;
and people with long-term health problems or weakened
immune systems. People who live with or care
for those at high risk should also be immunized.
This year, Holland Hospital's Home Care
Programs will again collaborate with our Community
Health Ministry Program, nursing care facilities and
other organizations to offer flu shot clinics at various
locations from October through December. Pneumonia
(or "pneumococcal") shots will also be offered at
the clinics.
Please note that pneumonia vaccines do not
need to be repeated each year. For most people, one
shot will last a lifetime; some people, however, may
require a booster shot after five years. The CDC
recommends the pneumonia vaccine for adults ages 65
and older and for anyone over 2 years of age who has
certain long-term health problems. Please consult your
doctor for more information.
