Recognizing a Sleep Disorder
Sleeping is not just a “break” from your waking hours. Sleep helps renew the energy you need to maintain your stamina, be mentally alert, keep a positive attitude, and be safe and successful throughout the day. People of all ages suffer from various sleep disorders and may not even be aware of it. A sleep disorder is a disruptive pattern of sleep that may include:
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Difficulty staying awake during the day
  • Excessive total sleep time
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Snoring
  • Muscle weakness or restless leg syndrome
  • Low energy or persistent exhaustion
  • Increased anxiety or irritability
  • Sleepwalking, bed wetting or nightmares
Sleep Apnea
We all know that a good night's sleep is good for mental and physical health. But if you snore and usually wake up tired, you might have obstructive sleep apnea. Besides robbing your body of essential sleep, OSA can lead to more serious heart problems later in life if left untreated.  Sleep Apnea is a common sleep disorder that occurs when a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep because the airway collapses, preventing air from getting to the lungs. This can happen dozens of times each night, preventing deep, restful sleep and stressing the heart over time.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing sleep problems, talk to your physician.

or call the Sleep Disorders Center to talk with a referral coordinator.
