The foot is one of the most complex parts of the body, consisting of bones connected by numerous joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. The foot is susceptible to many stresses.  Foot pain and problems can cause pain, inflammation, or injury resulting in limited movement and mobility.  A single foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles and tendons. There are about 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet, and they excrete about one cup of moisture each day. An average person takes 8,000–10,000 steps in a day. Over a lifetime this can add up to 115,000 miles—more than four times the circumference of the globe.
A podiatrist is a doctor specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot disorder
A podiatrist is a doctor specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders resulting from injury or disease. In addition to providing treatments and performing surgery, a podiatrist can detect symptoms of disease and illness such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Foot pain is often caused by improper foot function. Improperly fitted shoes can worsen and, in some cases, cause foot problems.  Shoes that fit properly and give good arch support can prevent irritation to the foot joints and skin.  There are many types of foot problems that affect the heels, toes, nerves, tendons, ligaments and joints of the foot.
