Before Receiving Services

There are things that you can do prior to receiving services to help us process your claims and to avoid unexpected expenses. Usually, it’s just a matter of calling your medical insurance company to verify coverage and receive authorization for services, if necessary. Following are important steps that you should take before receiving services from Holland Hospital:

Verify that Holland Hospital is an “in-network” provider.
Holland Hospital participates in most major health insurance plans. However, you should verify with your insurance company that Holland Hospital is an approved service provider. If the hospital is not, you may be responsible for paying a larger portion of the charges. Many insurance companies post an Approved Provider List on their websites.

Confirm your insurance coverage for a specific service or procedure.
Patients should verify with their insurance company whether specific procedures or services will be covered under their plan, and obtain preauthorization, if required. Some procedures or services may not be covered or may require preauthorization in order for your insurance to pay the claim.

If you are scheduled for a surgical procedure, an MRI, MRA, CT, or other radiological procedures, or pathological services, we recommend that you contact your insurance carrier as soon as possible to determine if the services are “covered”, and if the procedure(s) require a PRECERTIFICATION or AUTHORIZATION prior to receiving the service. Under most insurance policies, the patient and/or the ordering physician is responsible for obtaining a PRECERTIFICATION or AUTHORIZATION prior to service.

Provide us with updated and accurate information.
It is important that you provide us with updated and accurate insurance information for all the insurance plans under which you are covered at the time of service. If you are covered under more than one insurance plan, it is helpful if you indicate which plan is primary. This assists the hospital and your insurance companies with coordinating plan benefits.

If you are uninsured, request an estimate of charges.Holland Hospital will provide an estimate of hospital charges, upon request. These charges, however, will not include physician fees and other non-hospital provided services. Those will be billed separately. For an estimate of hospital charges, contact Holland Hospital’s Customer Service Cashier at (616) 394-3122.

Work-related injuries: If you will be seeking treatment at Holland Hospital for a work-related injury, please notify your employer and get authorization prior to your visit. When you arrive at Holland Hospital, please inform the registration clerk that you’re seeking treatment for a work-related injury. If this is a Worker’s Compensation claim, provide us with your employer and health-insurance information.

Tips:

Maternity patients: If you have just delivered a baby, please contact your employer within 30 days of your baby’s birth to add your baby to your current health insurance. If your baby is not added to your employer’s insurance coverage within 30 days, you may be denied coverage until your employer’s next open enrollment period, making you responsible for costs involved for your baby’s hospital stay.

Auto accident: If you are receiving medical care for injuries from an auto accident, please inform the registration clerk of your situation. Michigan is a “no-fault” state, meaning your health insurance - in coordination with your auto insurance - will be responsible for your health care bills regardless of who is at fault in the auto accident. Provide us with your health and auto insurance information so we can bill properly.

Work-related injuries: If you will be seeking treatment at Holland Hospital for a work-related injury, please notify your employer and get authorization prior to your visit.
