Hysterectomy is a common treatment for painful, chronic reproductive disorders.  In fact, more than half a million women have a hysterectomy every year in the United States.  Hysterectomy is the second most common surgical procedure for women in the U.S.

Philosophy of Care
At Holland Hospital, we don't just treat diseases; we treat people. Should your doctor recommend a hysterectomy, your surgeon will work with you to choose the least invasive and most effective course of treatment. Our integrated team of doctors, nurses, physicians assistants and many others will care for you and make your stay with us as comfortable as we can.

Diseases
Hysterectomy is often recommended to treat painful and disabling conditions such as fibroids (noncancerous tumors), endometriosis (noncancerous growth of the uterine lining) or prolapse (the falling or slipping of the uterus). Hysterectomy is also used to treat many life-threatening conditions, such as gynecological cancer or uncontrolled bleeding.
Procedures
At Holland Hospital, the very latest techniques and surgical systems, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, result in smaller incisions and faster recovery times for eligible patients. If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy, you may be a candidate for:
  • da Vinci hysterectomy—a new, less invasive robotic surgical procedure
  • Laparoscopic (vaginal) hysterectomy
  • Open abdominal hysterectomy
Recovery
Following a hysterectomy, you should expect to stay in the hospital for two to four days.  You should be able to return to normal activity with minor restrictions in two to six weeks.  After you start feeling better, you may wish to speak with our women’s health experts to discuss options for and alternatives to hormone therapy, questions about sex after hysterectomy and other concerns associated with the side effects of your hysterectomy. Dr. Barb DePree, Midlife Health Specialist, is a nationally renown expert in the field of women's health and wellness.
