Symptoms of a heart condition often begin slowly. At first they may only occur when you are very active. But over time, breathing problems and other symptoms may be noticed even while you are resting. Symptoms of heart failure, on the other hand, may begin very suddenly, often after a heart attack.
Common symptoms of heart failure include:
- Shortness of breath with activity which continues into rest time
- Swelling of the legs, feet or ankles (edema)
- Swelling of the abdomen
- Weight gain
- Irregular or rapid pulse
- Erratic heart beat (heart palpitations)
- Fatigue, weakness or faintness
- Indigestion
- Decreased alertness or concentration
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Distended neck veins
- Decreased urine production
Physical examination may also reveal:
- Fluid around the lungs
- Irregular heartbeat
- Swelling of the liver
- Crackling sounds in the lungs
- Abnormal heart sounds
